A US Army installation, Fort Belvoir is located about 12 miles south of Washington, DC and off of route 1 in Fairfax County, VA. It is home to the US Army Materiel Command (though under 2005 BRAC it is expected to depart for Redstone Arsenal, AL) and DeWitt Army Community Hospital, as well as many other units.
It boasts one of the area’s most user-friendly golf courses and a community pool.
As a result of the 2005 BRAC , Fort Belvoir is growing and expected to gain roughly 12,000 new jobs–3500 of them military, by September 2011. Some of the biggest impacts on the post will come from the closing of Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC and the absorbtion of medical care by Fort Belvoir’s Dewitt, as well as from the DoD organizations that are clearing out of leased space in other Northern VA areas.
